Aren't you the DMV?

No; you may call (801) 297-7780, (800) DMV-Utah, Click here, or contact your county assessor to register vehicles, determine vehicle taxes, or request forms for handicapped parking stickers. In Utah, unlike most other states, the DMV and Driver License are in different departments.

Our family will be traveling through Utah from another state. May my child drive in your state on an out-of-state learner’s permit?

Yes; however, your child must be at least 16 years of age and must adhere to the restrictions placed on their permit issued by your state.

Can I pay my traffic ticket at Driver License?

No; tickets must be paid at the court indicated on the ticket.

What if I need to change my name?

If your name is different from the name on your license or documentation, you will need to provide legal proof of the name change with a marriage certificate, divorce decree, adoption papers, citizenship papers, guardianship papers, or a court document indicating the name change.

How long do I have to change my address if I move?

Utah law states you must notify the Driver License Division with any change of address within 10 days so you will receive any notifications we may send you. (State mail is not forwarded by the post office). If we do not have a current address, you may have sanctions on your license that you are unaware of. Address changes may be made on-line or over the phone to any Driver License office in the state.

How long do I have to switch my license from another state?

If you have moved to Utah for the purpose of establishing residency or are employed on a permanent assignment, you need a Utah Driver License.

Why do I pay a reinstatement fee to Driver License if I already paid the court fines?

The court fines are separate from the reinstatement fee. When Driver License has withdrawn your driving privilege for any reason, a reinstatement fee may be needed in order to reinstate your driving privilege to "valid."

Can I get a Utah License if my driving status in another state is "not valid?"

No you must first clear the license action(s) with the other state(s) before you can apply in Utah.

What forms of ID do I need if I lost my License?

To replace a lost license you, must appear at a field office and present 2 forms of identification. This applies to duplicate and renewal licenses.

What do I need for a first-time driver license?

To apply for a first time Utah license you must be at least 16 years old, have held a learner permit for 6 months if under 18 years old, furnish proof of a prior driver license or proof of driver training, proof of resident address, and proof of legal presence (if applicable). When the course is completed, the driver training certificate and proper identification are required to begin the licensing process. If the applicant has changed names, a marriage or court document is also required.

I've lost my out-of-state license, now what?

To apply in Utah for a license without your out-of-state license, you must furnish proper identification, proof of resident address, and the Utah Driver License Division must be able to verify your current driver license. (We will contact your prior state to verify a "valid" driving status. This check takes a minimum of 24 hours.) You will then have to pass an eye test and written test. If your out-of-state license has lapsed, you may also be required to pass the driving test.

What information do I need for an ID Card?

Proper identification includes a certified birth certificate, Social Security card, resident address, and, if the name has changed, a marriage certificate or court document. There is a $18 charge for each identification card issued. (An out-of-state ID is not acceptable proof of identification).

Do I need my DOT Physical card before I take the CDL written tests?

Yes. To apply for a Commercial Driver License, you must be at least 18 years old, present your current driver license, your Social Security card, a current DOT medical card or Medical Long Form, resident address, and have one (1) year of driving experience. If you are under 21 years old, you will be restricted to Intra-State operation and will not be able to apply for Hazardous Materials, Passenger, or School Bus Endorsements.

No; you do not need to have a Utah ID to obtain a Utah driver license. However you will need one of these forms of identification to get a driver license.

Does an Identification Card ever expire?

The ID Card expires five years following issuance of the card. All Utah Identification cards issued with an ITIN expired on July 1, 2005.

Do I have to notify Driver License if I move and get a new card?

Yes; you must notify Driver License either in writing, by phone, or internet within 10 days. Although it is not necessary to replace the card as long as Driver License has been notified, after notifying Driver License, you must place your new address on the back of your ID card (must be secured to the back)

Can anyone get an ID?

To apply for a Utah Identification card, you must furnish proper identification, proof of residence address, and proof of your Social Security number. If you are under the age of 16, a parent or legal guardian must accompany you to obtain an ID.

No; there is not test to obtain an ID.

No; there is no need to make an appointment for an ID card.

You may renew your license up to 6 months prior to the expiration date.

How can I renew by mail?

The Driver License Division will send you a renewal by mail application if: you did not renew by mail on your previous renewal, and if your driving record for the five years immediately preceding this renewal show: no suspensions, no revocations, no convictions for reckless driving, and no more than four (4) reportable violations.

Can I get an adult license prior to my 21st birthday?

No; we cannot issue an adult license until the individual has reached their 21st birthday, even if your 21st birthday falls on a weekend or holiday.

When I renew by mail, do I get a new license?

a. Yes; you will get a new license if you are renewing a digital license.

b. No; you will get only a sticker if you are renewing an "old style" license.

I am a commercial (CDL) driver. Can I renew by mail?

No; Federal guidelines require that a CDL driver complete an application with updated information and required certification for each renewal. If a CDL driver moves or changes names at a time other than renewal, the driver is required to apply for a duplicate license within 30 days of the change.

How can I obtain a certified copy of a driving record?

A certified record is a driving record that has been certified to be a true, complete and correct copy of the record as contained within the files of the Department of Public Safety. Certified records take 10 - 15 days to complete. Click here to get the form needed for a certified record.

Is there a 3rd Party Certification program?

I have a School Bus endorsement, do I have to take a test to renew it?

Yes; all applicants for a School Bus endorsement are required to take the School Bus test. The current version (dated January 2007) of the Utah Commercial Vehicle Driver Handbook located on the web and at all driver license offices has a section dealing with school bus testing.
